Mermadale Briards

Mermadale Briards are located near Dunsandel, 45 km South of Christchurch, New Zealand. We are very close to the beautiful South Pacific Ocean and have wonderful views of the Southern Alps.
Our Briards are happy affectionate dogs that keep us busy both as pets and as show dogs.

Breeding

We breed both for conformity and temperament and we are testing to ensure our lines are CSNB free.
Our puppies are precious to us and we expect that any owner, that due to changing circumstances, can not continue to look after their puppy contacts us in the first instance so we can assist in re-homing.
Please note we only rehome Briards of our own breeding or those of other breeders by request of the breeder.
Some owners bring their Briards to us while they go on holiday and where possible they live in the house as one of ours and play with our Briards.

Grooming

Keeping long haired dogs looking good can be difficult if you do not have the correct grooming equipment.
The best tip we can give you is to keep up with the grooming, a well groomed Briard only needs a little attention every few days or a longer session weekly.
Groom with the Briard on a non slip grooming table, this saves your back, provides easier access to those hinden tufts and makes the dog feel special. Always reward your dog after grooming and before long you will have to stop him jumping on the grooming table as soon as it is put up.
Use brushes with strong wide spaced long and short bristles or wide spaced pins but avoid pin brushes with knobs on the pins these simply rip the coat out which hurts the dog.
Avoid combs with fine close teeth, combs with wide strong tapered teeth work best.
Other grooming aids include the Wahl or Moser Electric Detangling combs, loose (spining) tooth combs and loose tooth rakes.
We supply the "Briard Brush" and use two of these simulateously when grooming our dogs.
